The European Commission has announced the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the EU chosen as beneficiaries for the latest round of grants in the 2nd phase of the SME Instrument, part of the Horizon 2020 programme aimed at promoting, advising and funding the most innovative projects from European SMEs.

Among the 38 SMEs selected for this round four are Catalan. Each project will get up to 2.5 million euros (with five million euros going to projects related to health) to fund the development of innovative projects in different fields. Moreover, the companies selected will also receive 12 days of coaching.

Spain is the second EU member state (after Italy) to receive the most subsidies for SMEs in this round. Of the nine Spanish companies selected, which will soon receive a total of 13.5 million euros, four are from Catalonia: The Social Coin, Lenz, Hydrokemos and Worldcoo.

By September 17 2015, the Commission had received 960 applications from projects in phase 2 (innovation and business plans) of the SME grant programme; of all the proposals, some 3.4% were selected to receive funding. In all, the Commission will devote 33.5 million euros to SMEs in this round of the initiative.

Since January 1 2014, 331 European SMEs have been chosen as part of Phase 2 of the SME programme. Spain is the member state that heads the European ranking with 52 innovative small and medium-sized enterprises. For its part, Catalonia has 14 SMEs on the list of the small and medium-sized enterprises selected in the second phase of the programme.
