Do you remember the white remote control device for the old iMac? Well, at first glance, Ili seems to be the same thing: a Mac controller that hangs around your neck. The difference with this device is that it is capable of instantaneously translating a conversation.
Its working could not be simpler, all you have to do is speak into one of its two sides –while keeping the single button pressed down– and your voice message is translated and then reproduced by the speaker built-in to the other side of the device.
According to its creators, who presented the device at theCES fair in Las Vegas, Ili does not need an Internet connection to work, as it has its own database of more than 50,000 words and phrases. This is what makes Ili so interesting, and what makes it stand out from its competitors, as these devices are more often used on trips abroad where there is no guarantee of being able to get online.
For the moment, it only supports two-way translations between English and Japanese, and English and Chinese. Nevertheless, the company is currently working to add Spanish, French, Thai, Korean and Arabic, even though it has still not announced when these languages will be available.
