Start-up is a word that is all the rage. Every year, entrepreneurs gain more ground as the heroes of the moment, but it is not so simple to come come up with a successful business project. The city and the environment in which it takes place has a lot to do with it. Despite all the efforts made to turn it into a centre of entrepreneurship, the truth is that Barcelona is still not among the 20 best cities in the world for start-ups. According to the 2015 Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking, drawn up by Compass, the United States and Silicon Valley continue to top the list of most favourable places.
The study, which due to the difficulty in collating data because of linguistic barriers excludes cities in China, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea; uses five basic parameters as a reference. In terms of performance, funding, market reach, talent and startup experience, Silicon Valley remains ahead of other cities around the world for start-ups. New York, Los Angeles and Boston come next, with Tel Aviv closing the Top 5. Compared with the previous ranking, there is only one new city among the top 20, Austin, which comes straight in at number 14.
This study is based on data from 11,000 start-ups around the world and more than 200 interviews with entrepreneurs. The results are the 20 best cities in the world for start-ups.
