European Mobility Week is taking place over the next few days. It is the perfect excuse for us to pause and take stock of one of the key aspects in the sustainability of cities. Large urban centres are home to the vast majority of the global population, a trend that increases year-on-year. The huge population density of cities obliges them to take action in a number of spheres to make them sustainable and habitable. The Sustainable Cities Index by Arcadis ranks the 100 most sustainable cities in the world in an index topped by the Swiss city of Zurich.
European cities clearly dominate the index, taking 16 of the first 20 places. Quality of life, economic health and respect for the environment are determining factors in placing European cities at the forefront. Asian cities are not far behind, while American cities are largely absent, with only one among the top 25, the Canadian city of Vancouver. Barcelona sneaks into the Top 25 in 24th position, four places behind Madrid.
